PINK RIBBON RIDE: Johnson City, TN
When Kathy Visneski, a nurse at Wellmont Medical Center, decided to hold a road race in 2002 to help raise breast cancer awareness, she had no idea how successful her venture would be. Due to success of the run, race organizers decided to add a bike ride this year, and expand the event to a weekend of activities throughout the Tri-Cities region. The inaugural Pink Ribbon Ride, presented by Mountain States Health Alliance, will start in Johnson City on Saturday, Oct 1. The Pink Ribbon Ride will start at 8 am at the Johnson City Medical Center. There will be something for riders of all ages and abilities with five different distances. The Mountain States Mayhem 100 Miler and Wicked Wellmont 75 Miler, as their name suggests, will be challenging and should attract some of the area's top cyclists. The Nolichucky 50 and the Willow Springs 25 will step down in degrees of difficulty, and allow less hardcore riders a chance to participate. The kid's fun ride will also be great for the children wanting to help the cause. The money raised from the ride will be shared between the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the MSHA Circle of Hope program. The Circle of Hope helps cancer patients and their families with basic necessities that they might not be able to afford otherwise.
