The Western North Carolina Bicycle Dealers Association (WNCBDA) is a coalition of independent bicycle dealers in the western portion of North Carolina, from Boone to Fontana. Most of the dealers are located in Asheville, which is the largest city in that section of the state.
The organization was formed to reduce hostility and negative competitive energy that festered between the dealers. It was hoped that by getting to know each other, a positive atmosphere could be attained and joint efforts would help to improve cycling opportunities for their customers. Mike and Claudia Nix of Liberty Bicycles were the driving force in forming the organization in the mid 1990s.
The coalition has been successful in providing cycling opportunities. They have been awarded the buffer land around the Alexander Landfill by the Buncombe County Commissioners for mountain biking trails. In 2000 the NC Trails Grant was received to develop those trails, and equipment was purchased to do so.
The Cane Creek Cup Mountain Biking Series was coordinated by the WNCBDA from 1998 to 2002. Member shops have individually sponsored many racing and cycling events such as the Hilly Hellacious Hundred. In 2002, we assisted in the organization of that event by running the rest stops.
We have also assisted in the Mountain Sports Festival and Strive Not To Drive Week.
We see that working together we can make a difference in the cycling scene, making a greater impact than working alone.
