Here's Archer's advance write-up for the Beginner Ride 8/15/2009, plus a couple of photos from the day.

Hi All:
It was very encouraging to receive all your support for The Novice Bike rider program. It really started out as a pilot project to learn as we go to see what worked and what did not work. We have now grown to over 50 people who have requested to be on the list of receiving email notices of the Novice rides. Much of this has been word of mouth and promotion by Liberty Bikes.

The Novice rides take place each Saturday morning and usually last about 2-2 1/2 hours. We stop during the ride to discuss some teaching points which seem to be better absorbed in small doses as practiced as we ride. We usually have a mini-skills exercise before the ride, such as how to turn and look behind you and keeping the bike straight. Crash avoidance will be our next exercise.

At the present, many of the riders see themselves as enjoying a bike ride that isn't intimidating.

I encourage each of you to come along as an observer to see if this is something that you might be willing to volunteer.

Our ride this weekend( August 15) will start from Carrier Park at 9:00 a.m. The highlights of this area are a bicycle velodrome, a race track for bicycles, and a Greenway with bicycle paths. Also, part of the road has a designated bike lane. New riders will appreciate the Greenway with the bike paths.

I would like to get us on the velodrome for a few laps if there isn't a race going on. It's location is 500 Amboy Road,Asheville. http://www.yelp.com/map/carrier-park-velodrome-asheville

Our ride from the Carrier Park Velodrome will be about 14 miles and should be over in two hours. Some may want to add some extra miles which we can arrange on Saturday. I am going to do a ride of the route tomorrow if it isn't raining.

Our route will be part in west Asheville and partly in the Monford neighborhood. We will skip the hilly section around Riverside Cemetery. Please note that the ride will start at 9:00 a.m. If you have time we will meet for lunch at the end of the ride.

If you have any questions or concerns please write to mailto:ay42bp@charter.net
